Objective
A site visit to the New Building of Infosys was organised by the department of Civil Engineering under the guidance of M/s. Sobha Developers Ltd. on Tuesday, 10th July,2018 to provide an exposure on construction of foundation, building materials, method of constructions, and reinforcement cement concrete design to the 5th semester BTech students.
Report
The new ongoing building of Infosys located at Electronics City is a building of 3 basement floors + ground floor and 9 upper floors (3BF+GF+9UF). In the proposed building the superstructureproposed is 40m height. Besides, the building is of V-shape. There is another ongoing rectangular building of 3 basement floors plus ground floor and 4 upper floors (3BF+GF+4UF).
The project commenced in May 2018 and it is expected to be completed by December 2019. The cost of the project is INR 600 for a built-up area of 15 lakhs square feet.
During the visit; the students were taken to witness the construction of the footings and demonstrated on how the reinforcements were provided for different structural members, and how the grouting is carried out. Further, the different criteria taken in account for any design were explained.
About the foundation:
Excavation was upto a depth of 10m; majority of footings were isolated footings of size 3m x 1.5m, as the hard strata was found at a considerable depth. The foundation was designed for allowable settlement of 25mm and for a soil capacity of 70 – 80 KN/square meter. Concrete of water-cement ratio of 0.35 to 0.40 was provided by Transit Mixer; and the different procedures followed to check the quality of concrete were explained. The concrete was pumped and needle vibrator was used to achieve the compaction. The grade of concrete used was ranging from M30 to M45 and Fe500 was provided for steel reinforcements. The maximum diameter of bars used was 40mm. A cover of 50mm was provided since footings are in direct contact with soil.
To account for the uplift pressure, due to the higher ground water table, pipes were run below the basement, which would collect ground water and discharge it to an appropriate place.
About the superstructure:
Precast structural members such as beams, walls, slabs and even columns were used. This decreases the project duration time and reduces the cost (transport of materials, hiring of cranes, etc.) by assuring a better control of quality. The process of how those structural members are assembled at site was explained in detail and the importance of grouting which is done with Sika in order to provide monolithic structure(concept of lap joint) and assuring the adequate transmission of loads through structural members were thoroughly explained. The highest grade of concrete used was M60 and a cover of 20mm was provided.
The building will be a Platinum rated green building with a particular shape (V-shape) in order to account for ventilation and self-lighting halls.
To conclude, this was a very interactive moment where we could relate various concepts acquired in class to the practical knowledge in the field. This new bridge to the real-life project will help us to link with the various concepts discussed in class especially in Foundation Engineering, RCC Design and Structural Analysis.
